Angolan government plans to increase conservation areas by 2012   [ 2010-02-08 ]

Luanda, Angola, 8 Feb – Angola’s Environment Ministry intends to establish new nature conservation areas in the provinces of Huambo, Uige, Huila, Lunda Norte and Kwanza Norte, the ministry’s head of the department of nature conservation areas has stated.

Joaquim Lourenço Manuel made his comments in Luanda during the first technical workshops on national parks and conservation areas. Plans also call for the new areas to encompass all the biomes (geographic regions with specific environmental conditions that determine flora and fauna) spread throughout national territory.

The government via the Environment Ministry and its partners is likewise working on the possibility of recovering the reserves of Luando (Malanje), Namibe and Mavinga (Kuando Kubango), among other projects.

Angola counts 13 conservation areas, characterized by national parks, integral and special nature reserves, covering a total of 6.6 percent of its territory. The aim is to increase that figure to 15 percent of total area by creating the new areas.

The first technical workshops on national parks were held last week at the National Public Administration School in Luanda, with the participation of various national and foreign entities. (macauhub)
