FACIM 2010 will be held, confirms Sogex ex-president   [ 2010-02-08 ]

Maputo, Mozambique, 8 Feb – This year’s Maputo International Fair (FACIM 2010) will definitely take place, the former president of the Sogex management company for expos, fairs and congresses has told the Maputo-based newspaper Noticias.

Americo Magaia did not, however, indicate the site. The fact that he stepped down from the board of that company will not jeopardize FACIM 2010, he added, thus denying rumours whereby it might not be held due to management changes at Sogex, which organizes the event.

The entrepreneur Kekobad Patel was presented last week as the new Sogex president, a position he holds on behalf of the CTA Confederation of Business Associations, which holds a 39 percent stake in the FACIM promoter.

Rumours that Facim 2010 might not be held recently gained force when Sogex began a process of collective employee dismissals. Also, work on building the new pavilion that will host this year’s fair has yet to begin.

Last year it was announced that FACIM 2010 would be held in a new space somewhere in the Ricatla region in Marracuene district, because the downtown Maputo site where the fair was usually held is being reconverted to house new luxury buildings built by the area’s new owners.

The Maputo International Fair was originally called the Mozambique Industrial and Agro-Commercial Fair (hence FACIM). It is managed by Sogex (Sociedade Gestora de Exposições, Feiras e Congressos), which until very recently was held by the state (with a 10 percent stake), Americo Magaia (31 percent) and technical managers and workers (20 percent).
