Sao Paulo, Brazil, 9 Feb – The Chinese Railways Ministry has created a working group to prepare a proposal to compete for construction of Brazil’s first high speed railway line, newspaper Estado de São Paulo reported.

The high speed train, which will link Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Campinas, will travel over 510.8 kilometres at a speed of between 300 and 350 kilometres per hour and will be one of Brazil’s most expensive ever projects with estimated investment of 34.6 billion reals (around US$19.2 billion).

The working group from the Chinese ministry is led by Wang Xiaozhou, who was in Brazil in November, 2009 and who on 22 January met in Beijing with the Brazilian ambassador to China, Clodoaldo Hugueney.

Speaking to the newspaper, the ambassador said that the Chinese planned to visit Brazil again “soon.” According to the schedule from Brasilia, the tender will be published in February and the winner will be announced in May.

The paper also said that the Chinese working group was currently seeking Brazilian companies in the construction and consulting sectors to be part of its consortium, that credit will be secured by the China Development Bank and that, as well as the bank, the consortium will include companies that manufacture carriages and railway equipment.
